Excel files not opening

Double click on a word or other doc on the desktop, opens word and the file,
nop probs
Do the same thin on an excel doc, excel opens ok, but the file does
not?!?!?! To open the file i need to go, file, open, whatever.xls

Happens on all excel files

applications'
