Excel files won't open after program crashes

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Hi,

I'm having a problem with Excel in that it has crashed a few times and I've just found that the files I was working on now won't open (although I resaved them when prompted at start up, under a new name). The old version does not contain the new version of data and the new saved file brings up an error message saying that the file 'might have been damaged or modified from its original format' and won't open. I am saving as .xlsx files and they all contain pivot tables, complex graphs etc that will not open under any other program (that I know of).

Please could you tell me what to do to retrieve these files as they contain vital data for my work. I have googled the problem and there seems to be quite a few people with the same issue with Excel for mac?

Thanks in advance.

Can you please check your Office Suite is fully updated (the latest version is 12.2.3)? If you still can open the file, try open it with WinXL2007 and then resave it. If you don't have WinXL2007, I can help ([email protected]).

Thanks,

Sadly, you will probably have to restore from your backup.

The reason Excel crashed is likely to be because it could not read something
in the file.

When it recovered, it still couldn't read it, so it deleted it.

Sadly, that's the ultimate outcome for a corrupt file. If it gets bad
enough, Excel goes into recovery mode, opens what it can and deletes
anything it doesn't understand.

Your only possibility is to restore from backup. If you regularly work on
such complex files, consider installing a "Streaming" backup system that
takes a snapshot of any file you have open each time you save it.

Sorry...
