Excel found unreadable content in filename, but file is OK

Dear group

I have the following problem with Excel 2007, SP2 on XP Professional
SP3: When i try to open a *.xlsx or *.xlsm file with excel using
'Office-Button' --> Open, Excel throws the following error message:
"Excel found unreadable content in <filename>". If i open the _same_
file using the recent list of Excel (Office-Button, click on the
desired file in the recent list), Excel opens the file without any
problems. Doubleclicking an excel-file inside the windows explorer
opens the desired file also without any problems.

On other workstations with identical environment, i can open the
'errornous' file using 'Office-Button' --> Open, so i am quite shure
that the file itself is correct.

After i try to open a file using 'Office-Button' --> Open and getting
the errormessage, all subsequent attempts to open a file, whether by
'Office-Button' --> Open or by recent list, are failing. After i close
and reopen Excel, i can again open files using the recent list.

Reinstalling Office 2007 and applying SP2 did not correct the problem.
This problem occures also with very simple excel files, like one cell
with content 'ABC'. Microsoft reports different problems / solutions
in case of excel files with references to other excel files or pivot
tables. This seams to be a different problem as i don't have any
references or pivot tables and it also happens with very simple files.

Additional error message says (in german):

Reparierter Teil: /xl/worksheets/sheet1.xml-Part mit XML-Fehler.
Fehler beim Laden. Zeile 2, Spalte 554.
Reparierter Teil: /xl/worksheets/sheet2.xml-Part mit XML-Fehler.
Fehler beim Laden. Zeile 2, Spalte 418.
Reparierter Teil: /xl/worksheets/sheet3.xml-Part mit XML-Fehler.
Fehler beim Laden. Zeile 2, Spalte 418.

or in xml-format:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>
<recoveryLog xmlns="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/spreadsheetml/
2006/main">
<logFileName>error022120_02.xml</logFileName>
<summary>Fehler in Datei 'C:\Mappe2.xlsx'</summary>
<repairedParts summary="Die folgenden Reparaturen wurden
durchgeführt:_x000d__x000a__x000d__x000a_">
<repairedPart>Reparierter Teil: /xl/worksheets/sheet1.xml-Part
mit
XML-Fehler. Fehler beim Laden. Zeile 2, Spalte 434.</repairedPart>
<repairedPart>Reparierter Teil: /xl/worksheets/sheet2.xml-Part
mit
XML-Fehler. Fehler beim Laden. Zeile 2, Spalte 418.</repairedPart>
<repairedPart>Reparierter Teil: /xl/worksheets/sheet3.xml-Part
mit
XML-Fehler. Fehler beim Laden. Zeile 2, Spalte 418.</repairedPart>
</repairedParts>
</recoveryLog>

I looked at the XML-Files by renaming the xlsx-file to zip and
extracting the contents. The error messages above all lead to the end
of a pageMargin element, in fact to the character '>' after
'footer="0.3"/.

....<pageMargins .... header="0.3" footer="0.3"/></worksheet>

But again, it does not seam to be an error of the file(s) itself, as
the same file(s) can get opened on the same workstation using 'Office-
Button' --> recent list or by doubleclicking the file inside windows
explorer.

Can anybody give me a hint how to investigate further or how to solve
this problem?

@Alan: No thanks, i don't need your tool!

Thank you very much for your help!

Hi Shane

Thank you for your answer. Unfortunately, the mentioned hotfixes did
not solve the problem.

Cheers, Roger
