Excel highlighting

Whenever I click on a cell the cell stays highlighted and
I can't release it. It acts as if you are holding the
Control key and I can't release it

try the f8 key

If F8 key is invoked you will see either EXT or ALT
on the status bar below the spreadsheet. More about the status bar at
