Excel leaving tmp files behind

Excel has recently started leaving tmp files behind every time I open an
excel file. I know it usually creates these files as a working scratch pad
but it normally erases the tmp file when the main file is closed. For some
reason my excel 2003 now leaves them without the cleanup in whatever folder
the original file was opened from. Anyone have any idea how I can get Excel
to stop being so messy?

My McAfee virus scan uses EPO update pushs on a network and has been working
ok. I am thinking of removing McAfee and reinstalling, then running all the
McAfee updates against it. We have auto MS updates turned on and I am
wondering if that has created the problem. I was also thinking of running
detect and repair. Your thoughts?
