Excel links broken by server migration

Hello,

I have a question regarding links between Excel files that
has been lingering in my mind for days.

The IT department will migrate my directories and files to
a new directory on another server, so the path of my many
Excel files will be changed, braking the links between
these files. Since I have over 100 Excel files with
several links within each file, it would take me too much
time to open them all and change the links.

Could somebody tell me whether there is a way to tackle
this problem ? I'd imagine that something needs to be done
in the copying process (in the server migration) at the IT
department. Can they run a script that automatically
adjusts all the Excel links ?

Greets, and many thanks in advance,

Jan

If your files all maintain the same directories, they
should be fine when they are moved. On a daily basis, I
move files for about 20 different projects (well over 100
files) between my work PC, server and home PC, all using a
different drive letter and I never have a problem. As
long as the files use the same directories, it doesn't
matter what drive letter is used, and links remain
unbroken. So when your files are moved, just make sure
your IT department copies the whole directory structure.

Thanks very much for your answer.

I gave that a try on a different computer and indeed, this
seems to work. Nonetheless, the migration will change the
directory structure slightly: there is one level in the
directory structure that is being added. (The name of the
department will be added in the structure.) Apparently,
when the links are between files in the same folder, Excel
is able to sort it out by itself. When my files are in
different folders (as is almost always the case), the
links get broken.

Is there someone who has had the same experience ?

Many thanks,
Jan

LinkFixerPlus

Hello,

A utility program called LinkFixerPlus (www.linktek.com) can be used t
help report and fix broken links in Excel files when files are moved t
a new folder structure.

You may want to take a look at this program as it sounds from you
problem description that it would help
