Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I have a problem formatting some of the cells in a sheet to currency or accounting. I've tried everything from copying and pasting the number formats from other cells, but without any success.

You do not explain "without any success" means. what happens? What
EXACTLY is the cell contents? What do you want it to look like? What
hapens, EXACTLY, when you try to change it.

It is possible that the cell actually contains text and is therefore,
not formattable. Are there leading or trailing spaces?

I'm trying to change the format to accounting. No success means when I copy the the accounting format of the other cells and try to paste special, formats, nothing happens.the cell contents stays the same format as before.when I drag the cells from the correct format to the cell containing the incorrect format it changes, but as soon as I make a change in the cell that gives me the problem it changes back to the incorrect format. The document is an Excel 2003 sheet that changes to the correct format(accounting)when I make changes in Excel 2003 in Windows.

What happens if you select the problem cell & use Format> Cells - Accounting
or use the Currency formatting button on either the Formatting Toolbar or in
the Formatting Palette rather than the Format Painter?

When you select one of the problem cells what displays in the Formula Bar?

That's a classic sign that the cell contains "text", not "Numbers".

Numbers stored as text look exactly the same as numbers stored as numbers to
you and I, but Excel can't calculate or format them.
