I am told one can convert cells with a formula to a static value without difficulty but don't know how!

You can do this using copy, paste special: values.

So, if you'd like to leave it in the same cell simple highlight the cell, click ctrl-c to copy the contents. Then, while still in the same cell, right click and select PASTE SPECIAL. In the popup that opens select values. Now the contents of the cell are the formula result, not the formula anymore.
