Excel open NOT in compatability mode

When I go to open a new Excel application I want it to be in the xlsx file
format. However, everytime I open Excel it is in the 97-2003 file format. I
go to the Excel options and change it to the xlsx format close Excel, but
when I reopen a NEW Excel application it's in the 97-2003 format. This
option that I changed was how to it saves not how it opens, that is what I am
trying to find out. Is there a way to default Excel 2007 to open in the 2007
file format, because it always wants to open in the compatability format?

Office Orb -> Excel Options -> Save -> select "Excel Workbook (*.xlsx)"
from the 'Save files in this format' drop-down box.

Close any open workbooks you have, then open a new one. You should no
longer see [Compatibility Mode] in the application title bar and you
should see 1 million+ rows and columns up to XFD.

The Save setting affects what you see when you open a new workbook.
New features (e.g. more rows/columns) won't appear if you have "Excel
97-2003 Workbook (*.xls)" selected there.

Paul, thanks for your reply. I tried that already but everytime I do that
and open a new Excel it opens in compatibility mode and in 97-2003 format, no
matter if I change it to .xlsx format and exit. This is on my company's
computer so I am wondering if there is an install option to default this or
not to always open in this format. I can't remember if it asked me that when
I upgraded my personal system because that was years ago, I don't think it
did.

I have a shortcut toolbar to excel at the bottom of my desktop that I
normally use and thought maybe that might be the cause so I tried going
through the start menu >> Programs >> Office Tools >> Excel 2007, but same
thing. I change the save option to Excel Workbook hit the OK button, either
red X out or "close" out then long path back into Excel and it will still
open in compatibility mode (save 97-2003).

Do you have any workbooks that open automatically when you start Excel
that might be in the old format (.XLT, .XLB, etc)?

You can check in the XLSTART folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\-your_login-\Application
Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART

Or perhaps a personal.xls file with stored macros? If that's the case,
save your personal.xls file as .xlsb (or copy the macros to a new
personal.xlsb file and replace the .xls one).

Paul,

I did have a workbook that opened automatically but already thought of that
and removed it. I do have a personal.xlsb macro, which looks like it is in
the correct format. Just in case it was causing a problem I removed it and
tried to do it after even rebooting my computer and still the same problem.
