excel opens multiple files upon execution

Excell 2003. User opens Excel and it automatically opens up multiple, I
mean dozens of documents, some of them are Word docs, some are Excel. She
gets all kinds of messages stating this document is the wrong type, etc. etc.

They appear to be recent docs she has opened before.

What the hell is happening here and how do I fix it?

Tools|Options|General tab
Make sure the the textbox labeled "at startup, open all files in" is empty.
