Excel sheet closes after opening a hyperlink

When I open a Word doc with XLv.X via hyperlink (either one inserted
with Insert/Hyperink, or =HYPERLINK()), I don't see the worksheet
closing.

Does XL quit? Does it matter whether Word is running or not?

After reviewing further, it seems as if the excel sheet does not close but hides. Is there a setting that I need to change so that it wont hide the excel sheet when I open a hyperlink?
