excel short list

how can i delete obsolete or erased worksheet titles from the short list
which comes up as soon as i start excel? some of them have been removed from
the main directory but still come up in the beginning short list.

Not sure what you mean by the "short list" but if it is the files most
recently looked at on the "file" menu, You can adjust the number that you see
in the list by going to tools>options>general tab and either remove the check
mark from "Recently used file list" or change the number in the "entries" box.
