Excel slow on saving

B

Bill Ridgeway

Ever since downloading (28/09) Office 2003 Service Pack2 the larger Excel
files have taken a while (some 10 seconds) before starting to save to disk.
I have put this down to something in SP2 - although it may be coincidentally
something more sinister.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Regards.

Spare a thought for moi,
my excel 97 currently is using 40sec to over a minute to save.
I have been offered links to investigate
but no luck as yet.

The "chicken soup" solution that cures everything (unless it doesn't)...

1. Delete everything in the Temp folder dated prior to today ( Start | Run | %temp%).
2. Uncheck all "Add-ins" in Tools | Add-ins.
3. With Excel closed and after step 2 above...
Delete the user8.xlb (xl97) or Excel*.xlb file - (use lose all Menubar/Toolbar customization)
4. Run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter
5. Get plenty of rest. <g>

Hiya Jim,
my desperation may be guaged by the fact, I am willing
to sell my Grandmum for a suitable fix.
I'll take the Chicken Soup for a taste test, and report back.

(If it works, do you want Grandmum sent Airmail, or economy rates?)

Rodney,
I don't have room for Grandmum, but would like to hear
your results. Also, maybe a count (estimate) of the number
of files in the Temp folder.

One more thing to look at.

Turn off "Journalling" in Outlook.

Hiya Jim, Gordon,

| I don't have room for Grandmum, but would like to hear
| your results.

Your loss :), she makes a trifle to die for.

The Chicken Soup recipe failed.
current status:
Opening XL 20 seconds
After opening a file 1.539Kb , I resorted and closed the file
the file closed in 40 seconds, then left another file "Personal.xls"
which took 20 seconds.

I opened the file again, did not touch it, and exited
this took 70 seconds to close.

I take pride in good computer husbandy, and expected the temp file
to be minimal however the status was
http://cjoint.com/data/kqc4eR4BJd.htm

Most of the files are 0Kb files generated by ACDSee
with an extension of "descript.ion"

I had squillions of "Add-ins" ticked
so unticked all bar the "Autosave" which I like to have.

I have yet to defrag, but do that on a regular basis
I have an ME defrag engine on my Win98 machine.

I have never run "Disk cleanup" ever, is this a "risk" at all ?

I have a 4 million record database aboard, and rather not
take any risks on HDD shuffling.

Thanks for your hints thus far.

Best Regards
Rodney

Rodney,

I don't even know if Win 98 has a disk cleanup option.
In any case, using the file compress option in disk cleanup is not
recommended in the tips I have read.

Unchecking the add-ins was to prevent problems with
having add-ins installed but no menu items available to activate them.
(That is assuming you deleted the user8.xlb file)
This is also a verification that none of them are causing the problems.
I would still try opening and closing XL with all of them unchecked.

The other place to check is in the xlStart folder to determine what
other programs (if any) are starting with XL. Take a look at...
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart"

Does your Grandmum take home delivery orders? <g>

Ok Jim,
I'll spend today doing a defrag and
I'll uncheck everything for a test.
I'll also visit the links I was offered prior
and work through some more ideas.

FYI

Just a FYI,
I can open a new "workbook" takes a fraction of a second.
I can close that workbook, takes a fraction of a second.

I can type one single character in 1 cell eg "a"

then it takes 40 seconds to close.
must have trouble somehow writing to disk

Do you think it wise to uninstall, then re-install MSOffice?

Rodney,

A re-install in the last thing I would do.
I would uncheck that autosave.
I would delete the user8.xlb file.
I would clean out the temporary internet files and the recycle bin.
If I did not use/have/want optical recognition software then
I would remove the TBRUN9.xls file from the xlStart folder -
and/or uninstall the program.
I would make sure I have Excel service release 2 (SR2) installed.
I would check my anti-virus software to make sure it is not running
live checks on the spreadsheets...Norton | Options | Other and
uncheck "Enable Office Plug-in.
I would disable the find fast indexer...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=158705
I would review any other references to Excel save problems that
I know about.
Then I would consider a re-install.

Hope that helps.
