excel start-up

For some reason every time I open excel, it trys to find
a document that no longer exists and gives me an error
message that I have to cancel out of before it lets me
proceed. I then can open what I want and the program runs
normally. I have checked the more obvious startup menus
but can't seem to locate the instruction for the program
to search for that old file. Does anyone have any
suggestions?
