Excel Starts up W/Macro

P

Parker

Hello All,

I have a client that when opening Excel from the shortcut on the desktop it
opens a "personal" file(named at the top next to Excel in the Program title)
that she didn't create, that can contain multiple macros?!?. If they click
on file then new the new workbook will then open fine. There is nothing in
the xlstart folder. Using Office 2000 Pro on Xp Pro. Any Idea how this
happened and how to stop it from opening this way?

Thank You for Any Responses In Advance

Some thoughts (running Office XP):
1) Right click on the shortcut and review it's properties. Make sure its
pointing to the Excel application and not Personal.xls.
2) Within Excel: Tools>Options>General: Is there anything filled in under
"At Startup, open all files in:"? If so, this acts as a secondary xlStart
folder. Either clear the setting or remove Personal.xls from that location
(assuming it's there).
3) Do a File search for "Personal.xl*" from Windows Explorer. If found on a
local machine you can probably consider deleting it. If on a network drive,
you may not have an option to delete in which case you'll still have to find
out why it's opening on startup.

Note: There can be more than one XLstart folder (Documents and
Settings\CurrentUser\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Excel\XLstart, etc.as well as
ProgramFiles\Office\Office10\\XLstart), but a file search should point that
out if that's the issue.

If you record a macro in Excel there is an option to store in
"Personal macro workbook". If this is selected the Personal.xls is
created and placed in the XLStart folder. Typically this workbook
opens as a hidden window and you never see it. However if it was
unhidden and saved then when Excel starts you will see the workbook.

Either hide the workbook by going to Window/Hide or remove it from the
XLStart folder. Note the XLStart folder that is used could be found in
the user profile (Documents and Settings), rather than in the Office
installation path.

Hiding the Workbook did the trick, but I still was not able to find this
personal folder. I did a search to no avail on all drives. The Client is
happy so I thank you all again.

Hello Parker,

First of all, thank Beth for the great experience sharing.

I understand that you cannot fine the personal macro workbook in startup
folder. I wonder if you have searched the following startup folder that
Excel uses at startup.

By default, the folders that Excel uses at Startup are <For Microsoft
Windows XP>:

- C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Xlstart

- C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

Note: 1. <User name> is your login user name.
2. By default, "Application Data" is a hidden folder in Windows XP. You
can refer to the following steps to sow hidden files and folders:

a. Double click My Computer on the desktop.
b. Click Tools - Folder Options, select View tab.
c. Click to select "Show Hide files and folders" under the Advanced
settings list.

- The folder specified in the "Alternate startup file location" box on the
General tab of the Options dialog box (on the Tools menu, click Options).

Hope it helps.
