Excel Track Changes does not work for .xls files

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Power PC

Tracking Changes does not work properly if an Excel Shared file is used in compatibility mode (.xls). After saving the document changes are no longer trackable!

Excel even crashes when trying to save such a sheet in the new format (.xlsx).

Excel Version 12.1.2
Mac OS X.5.5
