Excel tries to open Word documents

After several "upgrade" downloads from Microsoft, I now
have a problem when I click on a Word document, Excel
launches and then I get an error message that says "file
format is not valid". If I go to the icon and right
click and go to Open With and hit Word, it works just
fine. I originally thought it was just documents sent to
me, but it is happening with documents that I personally
created in Word. HELP!!
