Excel v.x not working with Excel windows

The value of "1" in the column width is greater on my Mac than on my
PC therefore with the same column widths selected, my Mac version is
larger. The same is true but in reverse for the row height. How can
I fix this?

column widths are determined by the default font and size - e.g. a
column width of 10 is wide enough for 10 numeric characters in the
Standard font and size that you set in Preferences/General. If one
platform doesn't have an exact match for the font, a substitution
will be made (though even with exactly the same font names, there
can be slight differences).

Choose the same default fonts in both platforms (note - changing the
font for a cell or column does not change the width).

Hi Shara,

As J.E. McGimpsey pointed out, this is actually a font problem - not a
Windows vs Mac problem (although that adds a layer of complexity).

I've found that I have the best luck with Arial font when sharing Excel
workbooks with other computers. But even with Arial there are problems. In
Excel 2000 and Excel XP (both Windows) there is a slight difference in the
size and shape.

Maybe some day everyone will use OpenType fonts and these problems will go
away. Here's an introduction to OpenType fonts:

Here's an article that was written about Microsoft Word, but the same
suggestions apply to Excel concerning fonts:
