Excel v.X. strange behaviour with not english weekday names

Hi to everybody,
I got a strange a strange behaviour with weeday names. It already
happened 2 times in the past.
I'm working with primary language on system set to italian and locale
(date & time) is set on standard italian too.
Now what happens in Excel.
Until yesterday morning I was able to set dates in cell format using
*italian* identifiers, which means "gg.mm.aaaa" (equal to
"dd.mm.yyyy") or "ggg" (equal to "ddd"). Now I don't have anymore the
ability to this I can just set them in english way, using "d", "m" and
"y".
The problem is that all my formulas (set in a worksheet I use to build
some data to import in other apps) are gone... ok I corrected them
changing everywhere "ggg" into "ddd", but the problem is now
another...
.... if I use "ddd" and "mmm" I obtain short names in english :) so
strange... if I put "mmm" I get "Jan" instead "Gen" and if I use
"mmmm" I get "Gennaio" wich is italian.
Anyone got the same/similar problem?
How can I solve it?
I already tried to (in order):
- do some changes on date & time sys preference in order to rewrite
preferences
- trash excel preferences
- trash & reinstall Excel
- trash & reinstall the whole Office suite
- check if some system plist was damaged

All without any success.

A couple of strange things.
I tried to use a different user, the problem remains.
Tried also to boot from a FW disk, same system, same Excel version. I
did this backup 10 days ago and Excel doesn't has this problem. Also
in this case cell format are messed.
So I thought it was a sys level problem so I tried to reset PRAM...
try to guess... without any success.

Plz, somebody help me :)
Thanks in advance!

.....
jo
