excel will not bold a cell, then program quits

installed office xp professional for student media.
When i try to pick a cell to bold after i highlight the cell. excel shuts
down some times. I have Norton 2005 installed and running, the computer is
less that 2 weeks old. The computer has Windows XP Home edition SP2 installed.
