excel will not open

I am using Windows 98SE & Office 2000. Excel will not open. Error Message is
- "This program has performed an illegal function and will be shut down". In
details it says - "excel caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE
at 0003:00003d32". Nothing else seems to be affected, just excel. Thank you
in advance for your help.
