EXCEL WORKBOOK LOCKING

Workbook is unlocked & unprotected. When opened has
popup message "File is locked...." click OK then 2nd
message "cannot be access - file may be readonly..."

However the workbook does open but when attempt to save
or saveas to another file name get message "file not
saved" - which is in fact the case.

Any clues - Excel 2000 on Win XP. No joy on
knowledegbase.
