No idea what what your problem is other than something doesn't look right to
you.
Do you have a Workbook open?
Do you have multiple worksheets in that workbook?
Do you have multiple views(windows) of one or more of those worksheets?
More detail please or a screenshot of the window.

XP Home is a Windows version.
Office XP is Office 2002 version.

Do you have a Workbook open? Yes, but It is hard to explain - The best I can say is that it is two windows with one inside the other. In order to open up the inside window you first have to open (widen) the outside window first. This is making it very awkward to work with more than one worksheet. I have to keep changing the size of all worksheets in order to work with the one I want. (is this making any sence?)

BTW...........what is Microsoft Office XP Home? There are two versions - Home & Business.
XP Home is a Windows version. Yes, they are both Windows versions.
Office XP is Office 2002 version. I am not familure with that.

If you click on Window | Arrange you will be presented with a series
of choices regarding how to arrange your windows within the Excel
window - click Horizontal and you will see the windows arranged one
above the other to fit your screen resolution.

I forgot to add - when you can see all windows, you can close unwanted
ones in turn by clicking the Close icon at the top of the sheet window
(not the Excel window) until you have only one left, and then click on
the Restore icon to maximise this. Save the file, and the next time
you open it you will have only one window visible.

Sounds like your windows are not maximized properly.
Try this.
Close Excel
Go to the Start button on the Windows Taskbar........lower left end and hit that
button.
Select Run and type in excel.exe then "Run"
This should open Excel with no workbook.
Hit the Maximize button on the title bar at top.
Now File>Open and pick a file to open.
Maximize it also if not maximized.
As to the other stuff..................you can make a screen shot by hitting
PrtScrn and pasting into MS Paint or similar then saving as a *.jpg file and
posting that file.

Thank you - you came up with the answer. I still don't know how my excel got
into in that situation, but you figured it out. Now, if only I will remember

Sometimes we guess correctly.
I sent you the long way 'round through the Start>Run just in case but you could
probably have done it from your original view of Excel Window and the worksheet.
