Excel WPS file

Hi, I have some Excel files on a CD and the file is a WPS file and when I try to open it in Excel I get an error message "File Format not Valid". What is this. Is this not an Excel file? How do I access the file

WPS files are Microsoft Works Text files.

Try opening in Notepad or Word.

Excel files are *.XL? where the ? could be one of a number different letters
depending upon which file format it is.
