Excel X spreadsheet rows and columns too narrow

I recently installed Office X on a G4 with OS 10.3.5. When I open Excel, the
default spreadsheet rows and columns are extremely narrow. I've seen this
same behavior in Excel for Windows but I forgot how to remedy it. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First thing I'd look at is Preferences/General. Make sure that your
standard font size is large enough.

Do you have a workbook named "Workbook" in your Microsoft Office
X:Office:Startup:Excel folder? If so, that's acting as a template for
your new workbooks. You can delete that file, or save a new template
with that name in that folder.

You can also try some of the other suggestions at

In Preferences...General increase the default font size; quit & restart
Excel.

If a column is too narrow, enter something into a cell which exceeds the
boundary, then in the column I.D. double-click near the RHS to auto-size the
column to fit the widest entry.
