Excel XP hangs

Trying to open an excel document with Excel XP, which has all service packs
and security updates applied. The doc in question opens, however, it will
start to calculate cells and then hangs. CTRL-ALT-DEL shows it not
responding. This doc will open just fine under Office 2000. I even tried
opening it with Office 2003, to no avail.

We have tried to open it locally and across the network, all with the same
problem. The main system trying to open it is a P4 with 512 MB and 40 GB's of
hard drive space, which I even defragged to no avail. It's running Win 2k
with all service packs and security patches applied. I've even tried it under
Win XP to no avail.

This document is a 16 MB spread sheet with a lot of pivot tables, cells, etc.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Chip Pearson has some notes to help diagnose startup problems at:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

A couple of guesses.

1. Clean up the windows temp folder. (then test it out)

2. sometimes the file that holds the customized toolbar settings gets hosed.
close excel
windows start button|Find (or search)
search for *.xlb
rename them to *.xlbOLD
restart excel

if it worked, delete the *.xlbOLD files and rebuild any customized toolbars.

If it didn't, rename them back to *.xlb.
