in excel ALL of my files are locked. i am not able to chage any cells. the
files are not marked as read only. i can not access the cell protection area
of tools as it is greyed out. any suggestions?

I would suggest asking in an Excel newsgroup, not Frontpage.

Disable macros. There is probably a startup macro locking the
spreadsheet and changing the menus.
