Could you tell me how on an excel sheet, I could remove the column headings,
but keep the row numbers?

You can't. You can turn both columns headings and row numbers on
or off together, but not separately.

Fake it!
Put the row numbers in column A with a bold font and gray(or whatever)
background. Be sure not to delete or insert any rows, though.

Good thinking Bill,
But we can get the row numbers to be correct even if rows are deleted by
putting the formula for the row instead of the value.
So in the column A, I would put " = ROW() " .
Should werk.
