When I type a number into a spreadsheet i.e. 12 it displays as 1200 on any new workbook in any cell. i have checked the formats, custom, special etc, iterations and regional settings in control panel yet all are OK. If I sum the numbers e.g. 1200+1200 the result is 24 - ??? this has only started o happen in the last two days.

Slightly off topic, but if you are Linda Gallagher who
used to live on Murison Boulevard, this is an incredibly
small world. I was your next door neighbour. Are you
opening a new file template .xlt?

Next time try something more original than Excel as a subject,
some stupid news readers like OE will group by subject and
search engines get very confused as well

Thanks for suggestions - I have found out its this:

Tools / Options / Edit Tab / and switch off Fixed Decimal, it was also
set at -2 which affects how the numbers display it should be +2

Personal.xls is not the default template.

It is a workbook where recorded macros can be stored for global use.

The default template should be BOOK.XLT stored in your XLSTART folder.
