Excel97 printing space markers on hp 5si

Does anyone know why a worksheet would print the space
markers in a spreadsheet? Is there a switch that I can
not find which I have mistakenly applied?

Are you sure you are using the right printer driver? Is this a recent
phenomenon? Does this happen with all files?
