EXCELL TRYS TO OPEN WORD DOCUMENTS

D

When I click on the excel icon on my desktop the program tries to open word
and access documents. I don't request this, I am just trying to open the
program. How do these files get associated with this action and how can I
prevent it from happening?

First, open in Excel in Safe mode. To do this, close Excel, then
go to the Windows Start menu, choose Run, and enter

Excel.exe /safe

Then, go to the Tools menu, choose Options, then the General tab.
There, ensure that there is nothing in the Alternate Startup
Directory text box.

Close Excel, and restart normally.

Unfortunately, when you open Excel in safe mode, the Alternate Startup Files
Location dialog box becomes empty and even if you type a new path it will
default back to the original path when Excel is started normally.

I got caught on this a couple of weeks ago.

If OP crashes due to the number of files trying to open, a Registry change is
needed.

If you want to edit the Registry you will find the key value here.....

Start>Run "regedit"(no quotes)OK

HKEY_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/Office/X.0(X is your version
number)/Excel/Microsoft Excel.

97 = 8.0
00 = 9.0
02 = 10.0
03 = 11.0

On right-hand pane you will see AltStartUp. Right-click and Modify by
deleting any path.

Hi Gord

Is it not possible to rename the folder with the files and then start Excel.
Maybe you can delete the path then???

Only if you can remember the pathname that was originally entered.

Most people having this problem do not even know they have a path in that
dialog box, much less remember what it is.

Only if you can remember/determine what the name of the folder is.

And at my age, it ain't that easy remembering!

OTOH, if you know which files are being loaded, you can search for them with
Windows' Search. If you have only one copy, that should give you the path.
