Exceptionally large files

I have found that Excel files for which I pivot tables and filters take up a
lot of storage space. Is this normal?

It depends on what is in the file and what you mean by "a lot" of
space.

Files for which I would expect the size to be less than 500kb (when compared
with files with similar content, turn out to be even as big as 6mb
