Maybe. If your version of Excel can't repair the corruption, you could
try opening the file in OpenOffice Calc (which would require
downloading and installing it if you don't already have it). OO Calc
has for years been able to open XLS files Excel can't.

If that also doesn't work, your final alternative would be trying to
extract data from the file using external reference formulas. If your
corrupt file were C:\work\file.xls and one of its worksheets were
named SheetX, create a NEW workbook in Excel, and WITHOUT opening the
corrupt file, enter formulas in the new workbook like

A1:
='C:\work\[file.xls]SheetX'!A1

If that returns something without throwing an error, fill that formula
into more cells. This may not work with all worksheets in the
corrupted file, but this technique has been used successfully to
recover data from XLS files Excel won't open in workbook windows.

But if this first formula throws an error, you're very likely out of
luck. Files can become so corrupted that they're impossible to repair.

Finally, this isn't a good newsgroup for application-specific
questions like yours. You'd be better off asking this sort of Excel-
specific question in an Excel-specific newsgroup, like either

microsoft.public.excel

or

microsoft.public.excel.misc

http://www.s2services.com/excelfreeware.htm - you may want to try to
work through the freeware and suggestions here. There are actually a
lot of things to try for free.

You can also try the commercialware for fixing corrupt Excel file,
like Advance Excel Repair, Excelfix, etc. see here:
http://www.s2services.com/corrupt-file-commercialware.htm. Generally
commercial options are $50 - $150 and you can try free demos to find
out how effective the software is.
