Exiting Windows XP

I have a problem with XP where anytime I shut down or restart, the system
will hang in 3 different places for about one minute each. First, the system
will wait about one minute before starting to close the applications. Once
that is done, it proceeds to the point where the only thing left showing is
my wallpaper and it says there for about one minute. It will then stop again
when it gets to the windows startup/shutdown screen for about another
minute. From there, rebooting is no problem. It was not always like this
(Toshiba Satellite Laptop about 3 months old). It was not a gradual change,
it just started happening one day and has done it consistently ever since.
What could this be?

Thank you
