Expired trial balance just downloaded?

I've used OneNote 2003 on a different computer but never installed on this
computer (Vista Home Premium OS). I remembered how helpful 2003 was and
think 2007 will be perfect for current projects. So, yesterday afternoon I
downloaded a trial of OneNote 2007. The download and install went without
any errors and I activated the trial. But, when I open OneNote, the window
comes up that says the trial has expired (in an hour???). I tried to
re-install choosing to use files that had been downloaded.....then again by
downloading new files. I've even uninstalled and re-installed. I'm fairly
computer savvy, but this has thrown me a loop! Any suggestions?

forgot to add that this is a 64-bit machine. Don't know why that would make
a difference, but.......

Obviously you did something wrong in answering the questions during the
activation dialogs.

Just last night I downloaded and installed the OneNote trial (besides my
"full" licence) in order to test it in a "virtual environment".
I replied to some - admitted <!> - most confusing dialogs and messages
and buttons (the sequences of which I can not remember at all), but in
the end I was successful.
I'm still wondering on how and why I got through :-(

My suggestion:
Just try it again.

In case you might be not successful, please give us more details on your
steps and especially the error-messages.

Thanks for the info Rainald. I hadn't tried to just download a new trial so
that was the next step.

I chose to download and save to the desktop (something I normally don't do!)
and left the box checked to run the file when the download completed. Vista
prompted for permission to run the program when the download completed and I
chose to continue. I was prompted for the product key which I pasted and got
the green checkmark indicating it was correct. Clicked on "continue" and
then on "install now". When I received the message that installation was
complete, I closed the download manager window and lo-and-behold, up popped
another Vista window saying compatibility problems had been detected. Had a
feeling that meant things had not really been successful so tried the program
anyway. There it was.....the activation window informing me the trial was
expired.

I went to the download folder the manager had created in case there was an
interruption in the download. Changed the X12-30151.exe file to run in
XP-compatibility mode as administrator and made sure all users permissions
were set the same. I uninstalled the OneNote that had just been installed,
double clicked the exe file and when prompted to use existing files or
download fresh ones, I chose to download fresh ones. This time, I chose to
not run automatically at the end of the download so I could check for any
error messages first......no error messages were found when the download
finished, so I chose "run" and installed the trial once again. Again,
entered the product code. Same result.....trial period has expired.

The only error was the compatibility one. Surprised the download manager
isn't Vista compatible, but there are ways around that and I think I've tried
that with changing the mode and making sure all users (including me!) are
able to run it in administrative mode.

I suppose I could download another trial, but not sure the results will be
any different. I really feel OneNote is the solution I'm looking for, but
sure would like to try it out before purchasing. :-(

Thank you for your comprehensive report.
Obviously the information on the trial period was set wring on your
first try and now the information is stored somewhere on your computer
(most probably in the Registry) and this causes that any new install is
impossible because of that.

I'd suggest that you call the MS-Hotline and ask them what to do.

I was finally able to open the program by skipping the step to enter the
code. That only lets me run ON 25 times instead of 60 days, but will be
enough to make sure this is what I want.

I ran into the "can't send to OneNote" problem. Yes.....I had read the
warnings, but since I'm an optimist I just knew there was a solution....there
isn't! I tried Daniel's work around and couldn't get it to work. And, can't
afford to spend another $50 for the driver Nils recommends. So, I searched,
downloaded, installed, tested, and uninstalled more stuff than I want to
think about......none worked or if it worked, you had to have a separate
"viewer" that wouldn't extract the file (a-la Adobe).

I gave up hope and was ready to scrap the whole idea. Until last night when
I found PDFcreator (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/). This is a
free, open source program that installs a new printer much like Daniel's
solution. But, this program can print in multiple formats including tiff.
Works like a charm. I have it set to print to tiff (always going to the same
file name so I don't fill the disk with copies I don't want). When it
completes, it opens in Windows Live Photo Gallery where I can crop or
whatever. Then I just copy and paste into a ON page. I choose the "insert
file as printout". Works like a dream. Granted having a "send to" option
would be much better but this will work until there is one!!

Thanks for your help and patience!!

To bad to hear on your problems with activation and the limitations
arising from that.
It would be too bad would you have to leave the testing prior to being
sure that OneNote really is one of the most useful instruments for
computer-based working introduce in the last decade.
I for one meanwhile can hardly imagine how to do without ...

Yes, the PDFCreator is a really fine tool.
Although having the full Adobe Acrobat (since the first version and
always upgraded), I use it for quite some tasks.

Good to hear.
To be honest: I came across the PDFCreator when following the
suggestions on the x64 printer problem (Daniel Escapa's and Nils
Kaiser's suggestion). And I'm really glad to have found it.
Granted having a "send to" option would be

I fully agree.
And I think that it would be great if you would post your success report
in Daniel Escape's and Nils Kaiser's threads.
The ON-x64 printer-problem will remain until the appearance of Office 14
and I'm sure that many users would be glad if the were shown your way.

Regards
Rainald
P.S. As posted on a someway "reverse" problem in another thread:
I'm pretty sure that things are *not* related.
Normally printing *from* ON works without any problem under Vista-64.
