Export to Excel from PWA

Why do some some Portfolio Analyzer reports take so long to export to Excel?
The reports are taking approx 45 seconds to return values in PWA, but the
export to Excel takes a couple of hours; any ideas?

This can happen when you export a large amount of time-scaled data to Excel.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply; I have moved the Time field to be a filter on the
report rather than a row or column and this has improved things a little, but
why is there such a difference between the reponse time in Excel compared to
PWA ....... surely they are both executing the sam SQL?

Rick:

The data in PWA is served up on a web page on the server rather than pushing
all of the data down the network pipe into a local worksheet. I think that
probably explains most of the slowness. Have you applied all service packs
to Office and your workstation?

Hi,

We have been doing some experiments ...

The report uses the following dimensions ..

Organisation (an Ent Resource Outline Code)
Project Name
Resource Name
Time, used as a filter field

....and measures...
Actual Cost

It works well with all the fields unfiltered, but when we start filtering
out certain projects, the performance takes a big hit ..... eg: from 20
seconds to 20+minutes.

We are looking at adding an Ent Project Outline Code to cover the different
project types and add this as a Filter and see whether this improves the
situation.

Richard
