Exporting FP2003 to Mac Dreamweaver or similar?

F

fb3

I am switch from PC to Mac and need to export my Frontpage2003 web
sites so that I can manage them on my Mac.

Given that one of the sites is 800 pages (a lit magazine) these are the
questions:

(a) Is Dreamweaver the only real alternative on the Mac?

(b) how do I get the FP-specific stuff (extensions, etc) out of my
files so that they will import into some other program?

(c) is this simply too big a job and should I continue to do the
site(s) in Win FP via Parallels or Bootcamp?

(d) why is this so maddening?

Many thanks for any help--

Oh, dear,
Dear Pier,
You have just run into one of the biggest headaches when running any Html
editor that uses proprietary extensions... Converting to a different
editor....

There is a Macintosh newsgroup about frontpage but I am not sure that implys
that there is a Mac version of FP. Dreamweaver is an industrial-strength
Html editor with a serious learning curve. I am told it also has some
proprietary add-ins.

It is possible to setup FrontPage so it will not allow you to use frontpage
extensions. This is really helpful if you want to be able to easily run the
website accross multiple OS's and webservers. But this trick will not stop
FP wizards from trying to use FPSE and it will not ease the problem of
re-trofiting a website to run without the extensions. Furthermore, if your
using FP themes you must have a FPSE webserver for them to work right. Many
of the FP extensions functionality can be replicated with Javascript, Asp
and Php as well as MySql.

To setup a new frontpage website (also know as "web") to not use FPSE you
need to open the web, then click on Tools->Page Options->Tab Compatiablity

I suggest you turn off "FP extensions" and Vbscript both of which are
Microsoft specific. You also might want to limit the kinds of graphics you
display. Some only display on Internet Explorer.

Hope this helped,
Tom Miller

This has been my thought: surely there is some way to _automatically_
clean the FB2003 HTML such that it is generic, or generic enough to be
imported to other software that my be useable on the Mac.

On FB2003 the Frontpage Sharepoint & Extensions are on TOOLS/PAGE
OPTIONS/AUTHORING and you ca turn them off, if I read the insructions
correctly, by choosing NONE in the Frontpage & Sharepoint Technologies
drop down box.

I did that and my site still runs on my machine. I need to turn off
the FP extensions on my server and then upload the new version to se if
it works online.

But I'm still looking for a way to "normalize" my HTML as written by
FP2003.

Any further suggestions? Anyone?

Thanks--
