Exporting Messages Problem

I want to do a complete fresh install of windows and am trying to save
all my email messages to a file first. However, when i click on export
Messages i get a message that says
Click to expand...

"The Export could not be performed

An error occured while initialising MAPI"

with only an OK button. Why is it doing this, what is MAPI, and why
can't it be initialised.
