I have an application that uses the word API to create documents that can
include barcodes. The characters required to generate a Code 128 barcode
include characters in the extended ascii character set. I am using a word
document as merge data source, I originally use a text file but this same
problem occurs with text files. Since installing Office 2003, I find that the
data from the merge field containing the special characters is being
converted to some dodgy character set. If I open the data source word
document, I get a dialogue box asking me what character set I would like to
use to make the document readable. The default is set to Japanese
(Shift-JIS), if I select Windows(Default) the document opens and shows the
correct characters.
I can only assume that this same conversion is happening during the merge
process.
Apologies for the long winded explanation.
Any ideas how I can turn off this conversion, considering this is an
automated process.
