Hi,

From a friend that uses a PC, I received an attachment that has the
extension .docX. Somehow the extension turned into .docx.cpgz, I think
After I¹d clicked on it. The icon has a vertical zipper. with the word ŒZip¹
below the zipper. When I opened it I couldn¹t find the document. There
seemed to be the quick flash of an alladyn unzip bar, but very very fast and
I think that¹s when it turned from ³.docx² into ³.docx.cpgz² I got a folder
that contained:

_rels (folder)
[Content_Types].xml
DocProps (folder)
Word (folder)

But no document.

I used stuffit expander v 10.0.1, and in addition to not opening it, I got
the message that the file does not appear to be a compressed file.

When I told my pc friend he toldeme he¹d sent it to ten people who had no
problem opening it, and that he¹d ³ ... had it with you Macintosh guys.²

What should I do to get the document, and what are those extensions?

..docx is the new XML-based format for MS Word documents. You can download a
converter for .docx and other file formats created by Office 2007 for
Windows or 2008 for Mac:

Ed,

Thanks, I upgraded my office 2004 one notch, then I was able to download the
format converrter and open the attachment.

I've never _not_ been able to open an attachment.

I admit I may have been lax in keeping up with upgrades, not only in Office,
but across the board. Nevertheless, there are some things that puzzle me.

Did Microsoft create the change from XML-based format to .docs, and just
automatically make it that their PC users, when they create an attachment,
that the attachment is now in a different format. My friend is not very
computer savvy. I'm sure he knows just barely how to even add an attachment.
He works on web, not client mail. Did Microsoft simply change the format
without telling people, even PC people?

I find it odd that yesterday I had to dig so mush through the web, without
results‹until I posted to this group‹to find out why I was not able to open
the attachment, much less what the extension is. I know nothing about
Microsoft-Apple politics, but I find it suspect that Microsoft should have
changed such a basic, widely used, formatting for attachments, without
either Microsoft or Apple making a more seamless transition from one to the
other.

If you or anyone else on this newsgroup would address what I've brought up
above, I would appreciate it.

Thanks, Rafael

Well, they did tell people, but not everyone paid attention or understood.
But yes, they did change the default format. Users can save documents as
..doc files if they choose, but it takes one more step than saving as .docx,
which is now the default format for both Word 2007 (Win) and Word 2008
(Mac).
I find it odd that yesterday I had to dig so mush through the web, without

Its not just happening to you MAC people. We have been receiving .docx
attachments to e-mail sent from a PC to OUR PCs!!! Just imagine our
frustration when we tried to download the converter and it said "be sure you
have all previous updates installed" - WE CAN'T get updates because we
installed the latest IE months ago when it first came out and Microsoft
recommended we install it, found it wouldn't work on lots of websites and
reverted to the old IE we had been using - somehow in the reverting Microsoft
no longer thinks we have a legitimate version of Windows XP Pro !!!!! SO it
won't allow us to download updates!!!!! I've been on forum after forum trying
to resolve this issue and now we encounter docx!!!
