Exterior walls won't keep their lengths

D

D Clark (TRG)

I can't figure this out at all and can't find out where to look. I am trying
to create a drawing of a building using the exterior wall shape and the
building needs to be 40' by 60'. Whenever I join the walls' corners though,
one or both walls changes lenght and I can't resize one without the rest all
changing. I am stumped.
Thanks,
Douglas Clark

You might notice that the walls have a reference line, and the connection
points are on one side of the wall or the other. When joining the wall
shapes together, you may have inadvertantly placed the reference line on
the 'inside' on some segments, and on the 'outside' in others. Typically,
for exterior walls, you would place the reference line on the outside, to
ensure that your external dimensions are to spec. Or you might prefer to
reference your lines on the inside, to manage the space from that
perspective. Either should work, as long as you are consistent.

If that is not your concern, perhaps you can give a specific example to
help me visualize better.

I have Visio 2003.
There is also the "Set display options"
In the Help I read "Allthough the wall reference line is typically
centered on the wall or aligned with one edge of the wall, you can locate it
any distance you want from the wall as well.

I have tried with the Connection Point Tool, I had a look at the
shapesheet, but I see nog way to do that.

In order to change the Wall Justification, you need to edit the Custom
Properties.

1. Right-click on the Wall shape, and select Properties from the
short-cut menu.
2. Change the Wall justification setting to Custom, click OK to save.
3. As in step 1, select Properties from the right-click menu.
4. You should now see a drop-down option for the Reference Line Offset,
from which you can choose the offset you desire.

Notice that the Offset selections are limited to pre-set options. If you
need to change these options for some reason, you would have to change the
Custom Properties using the Define function, where you can set the
selections in the Format attribute of the 'Reference Line Offset' property.

Also note that this is a shape-level selection, so in a drawing which
already has shapes on the page, you would have to update the existing
objects manually (or with VBA code). In a new drawing, you might want to
drop the shapes from the main stencil and set your options first, and then
make copies of these wall shapes to use in your drawings.

Hope that helps!
