External References vs. Get External Data

Greetings:

I'm using Excel 07. I've got external works books that contain data lists. Information in those lists is referenced via VLOOKUPS in thousands of places in the target workbook. Is it more efficient / easier to maintain if I pull the data into its own sheets via an ODBC connection and then do VLOOKUPSto the local copies of the data, or should I continue using the thousands of VLOOKUPS to external workbooks?
