Extraneous characters appearing to a text document while editing

I have been editing large (50 to 100 page) text documents using Word XP Professional. As I am editing the data, extraneous hidden characters, extra lines, and page breaks seem to appear at different places in my document. And sometimes as I am paging through these documents I will hit one of these hidden characters and the display will jump from page layout view to normal view all on it's own. Do I have ghosts in my files? Any help will be appreciated.

I've never heard of anything like this, and apparently neither has anyone else. The closest I can guess would be document corruption. If you save such a document as a web page (round-tip HTML format, NOT "Filtered") aopen it in Word, then save this as a Word document, does the problem disappear?
