extraneous characters in new message template

When I create a new message in Outlook, the template that
appears contains a line with the characters i>> and an
inverted ?. This line appears immediately above my
default signature. The first appearance of these
characters occurred only this morning. I have edited the
default signature and it is not part of the signature.

Any advice on how to delete these characters will be much
appreciated.
