Failing extensions?

I

Isidore

My web site is hosted by Earthlink. Lately, their service has been
deteriorating in that they offer little to no FrontPage support,
referring questions they can't resolve in 15 minutes to Microsoft.
During one of these episodes, one of the senior techies I spoke to
told me frankly that believed Earthlink wants to get out of the
hosting business, but that's all hearsay.

Among the few FP components I use on my site are a discussion group
and several include pages. The discussion group has suddenly stopped
functioning. When a visitor tries to post a question, he sees an
error message,

FrontPage Error.
User: please report details to this site's webmaster.
Webmaster: please see the server's system log for more details.

Earthlink refuses to help with this.

I tried recalculating links, but got the following message:

The server could not repeat your request. Contact your Internet
service provider or web server administrator to make sure that the
server has the FrontPage Server Extension or SharePoint Team Services
from Microsoft installe.

Details:

500 Internal Server Error
Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or
misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please
contact the server administrator and inform them of the time the error
occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the
error. More information about this error may be available in the
server error log.

Here are my questions:
1) The techie I spoke to said that if he reinstalls the extensions, I
might lose my password protection. I do not use FP password
protection, but that of the credit card company I use for my site. Is
the techie right about this?

2) I don't really want to do this because it entails an enormous file
transfer, but if I move my site to another host, is there a danger of
losing fuctionality in any of my FP components?

Any suggestions for dealing with this problem would be highly
appreciated. You'll need a password to see the discussion group with
your browser. If you're willing to do so, contact me directly and
I'll provide you with one.

Thanks in advance,
Isidore
