Figure (caption) numbering problem

My captions skip from Figure 16 to Figure 18. If I create
a figure crossreference, the dialogue box that lists the
figures for you to select from has Figure 17 coming after
Figure 18. If I create a page crossreference to that
figure, a page number and a text box toolbar appear, but
no cursor, text box, or missing caption is in view.
Figure 17 refers to the same drawing as Figure 16. If I
select the drawing and select Insert crossreference, a
text box toolbar appears. I had to insert the caption for
that drawing by the return symbol that follows the
drawing. How can I locate the text box that contains the
hidden caption and delete it so it won't mess up my
numbering. Find and Replace doesn't work for text boxes
as far as I can tell.

Hi Beverly

Three things to try:

1. Make sure there are no un-accepted tracked changes in the document. This is the most likely cause of your problem, and it answers
your question about how you locate the hidden caption: it's probably a tracked change. So to see it, view your document showing
tracked changes.

2. Make sure that none of the fields are in hidden text.

3. Do Alt-F9 to expose all the field codes in the document. Once they're revealed, you can search for them (eg search for SEQ
MyList). Check them all to make sure that they look the same.

Hope this helps.
