File and tools pop-up menus don't work (aren't clickable) What 2 d

This bug is really driving me nuts and it only started recently
(mid-January). Now when I open a document or start working from a blank
document template and then want to go to either the file pop-up menu or the
tools pop-up menu, i will be able to see the menu but for some reason none of
the options on them are clickable. All other pop-up menus, such as edit,
format, insert, tables, etc. are fine.

It's also random. It doesn't happen every time, but almost always. Very
rarely can i open a document and get a clickable file and tools popup menu,
but almost never and I don't know why.

I have genuine MSWord 2003 Teacher and Student Edition Software and am
running it on an HP Pavilion laptop (Pentium 4) with 512 MB RAM, 3.0 GHz
processor, 80G HD. I also have integrated antivirus and antispy software from
Computer Associates courtesy of SBC/AT&T Yahoo which has stopped online
(hidden, scripting, etc.) viruses from attacking the computer and which I
also use to scan each and every file that I knowingly download or copy to the
hard drive.

I have two programs that run integrally with MSWord, namely, Trados 6 and
Scansoft PDF Converter 3.0. Trados is a program for translation memory and
CAT. Both programs post their own menus/buttons on the MSWord application as
toolbars.

I've looked as much as I can on the MS website and on forums but haven't
been able to find anything already posted, and I really need to fix this
because it's seriously affecting my ability to do even elementary tasks such
as counting the words in a document or changing Word options from the popup
menu (i don't like keyboard shortcuts and don't use them), and since I'm a
Spanish<>English translator i'm always working with VERY TIGHT deadlines.

Can anybody help me with this?

This problem is almost certainly caused by a misbehaving add-in.
Whether it's Trados or PDF Converter or another add-in can't be known
without further investigation.

There's a sequence of troubleshooting steps in section 2a of
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm. Ignore
the heading about crashes; the diagnostic steps are the same. Footnote
2 at the bottom of the page explains how to find the add-in files.

Thank you, Jay. That took care of the problem nicely. Now all I need to do is
figure out how to get my Spanish Language Character Set Toolbar working
again. I still have all the .dll files, but Normal.dot just isn't using them
anymore (as per the instructions you referred me to, i have a "virgin"
normal.dot now). I also renamed the trados and pdf converter .dot files to
..old. I really wasn't using those add-ins that much anyway. I'll post again,
though, if I ever need them! =)
