File associations not working

Having just upgraded a windows 2000 laptop to Office XP,
the file associations no longer work.

When double clicking on a Word document on the desktop or
on explorer or in Outlook, Word no longer opens. However,
when opening Word, minimising and then double clicking the
document, this opens into Word.

Any ideas how to fix this as I have tried repairing Office
with no luck.

Have you tried right-clicking the problem files and selecting the
appropriate program from the pop-up menu to manually associate them?
