File conversion errors and macros

I upgraded to MSOffice 2003 this week. When I open Word,
I get a box that says File Conversion- NavVd with a
document of jibberish. I then have to go through 6 steps,
including turning off all macros to bring up a New
document. I tried to repair and re-install with the same
results. I also tried different encoding without success.
Where do I go? I disabled Norton anti-virus but still get the error. I cannot open Word until I click cancel (twice, with 2 other clicks to OK) and then must disable macros to open a new document. I have disabled macros to start without help.
