file does not have a program associated with it

When I try to open Word, or any of my MS Office XP programs, I get an error message that says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an associaton in the Folder Options control panel." I have used these programs recently with no problems. PLEASE HELP. I have an online class an projects are due. Thanks in advance.
